Google Hell As Matt Cutts Sees It

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Many SEOs claim that having pages in Google’s Supplemental Index is an indication that the G has found something wrong with your pages. Duplicate content, low quality backlinks, doorway pages, cloaked pages can cause your pages to wind up in Supplemental Results. Here is what I have determined based on my own experiences with Google.

Make all your Titles and Descriptions unique for each page.

Make all sidebar content unique.

If using WordPress, remove the Site title from the Title Tags

Use only the /%postname%/ as your permalinks. Recently tried this with my fiancee’s website The True Essence  of Life and I’m waiting for the results.

All this makes sense to this SEO. The role of the search engine is NOT to reward spammers and unethical SEOs with high rankings and high volumes of profitable traffic. The role of the search engine is to return the MOST RELEVANT content for a given search term. Therefore if I am trying to rank well for the term Google Hell with this post…which seems more relevant “Google Hell - The Bespeckled SEO” or “Google Hell”? To me, the latter seems and is more relevant.

So, unless you are a very well known website, most people will not search for “The Bespeckled SEO”. If you want to insert your website name into your post or homepage for some reason…Just edit the post name to something like “Google Hell - The Bespeckled SEO”.

To take the site name out of the automatic Title tag on a WordPress install just open up your header.php file and search for your

 <title><?php wp_title(”); ?><?php if(wp_title(”, false)) { echo ‘ :’; } ?> <?php bloginfo(’name’); ?></title>

and change to:

 <title><?php wp_title(”); ?</title>

or you can simply download this really cool plugin entitled simply Another Title.

Matt Cutts over at Googleplex has this to say about Google Hell.

  1. There is a plugin called All in One SEO Pack that optimizes your titles and avoids duplicate content (category pages + archives) out of the box …
